چکیده

Market dairy cows (n = 34) were used to determine the effects of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) supplementation, in addition to concentrate feeding, on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass yields. Cows were stratified by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) concentrate fed for 42 d (control) or 2) concentrate fed for 42 d with ZH (8.33 mg/kg) from d 19 to 39. Dietary supplementation of ZH had no effect (P > 0.05) on locomotion score, BCS, BW, ADG, G:F, or DMI over the course of the feeding period. Supplementation with ZH increased (P < 0.01) ultrasound LM area and decreased (P = 0.03) i.m. fat percentage but had no effect on 12th-rib backfat. Carcasses from zilpaterol-fed cows had greater (P = 0.02) dressing yields, larger (P < 0.01) LM areas, and improved (P = 0.02) USDA YG. Carcasses from zilpaterol-fed cows also had increased (P < 0.05) primal, subprimal, and selected added-value cut yields on a weight basis as well as on a percent of chilled side weight basis. According to the results in this study, supplementing market dairy cows with zilpaterol improved carcass composition and yields without having adverse effects on overall carcass quality.

Effects of preslaughter withdrawal period on response of feedlot heifers to zilpaterol hydrochloride supplementation: growth performance and carcass characteristics.

Sixty-four crossbred heifers (451 +/- 23 kg) were used in a 42-d feeding trial (4 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design) to evaluate the influence of preslaughter zilpaterol hydrochloride withdrawal period on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Heifers were fed a diet based on steam-flaked corn (2.13 Mcal of NE(m)/kg). Treatments were 1) control, no zilpaterol sup...

Effects of dietary ractopamine hydrochloride and zilpaterol hydrochloride supplementation on performance, carcass traits, and carcass cutability in beef steers.

British × Continental steers (initial BW = 484.6 kg) were fed at a commercial feed yard to evaluate the effects of β-agonists on live performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass subprimal yield. Weights and ultrasonic measurements were used to allocate steers to pens (n = 40) divided equally into 4 blocks, with 2 treatment replicates per block. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatm...

Effect of zilpaterol hydrochloride supplementation on cutability and subprimal yield of beef steer carcasses.

Beef steers (n = 11,877) from 7 studies were fed zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) for 0 or 20 to 40 d before slaughter to determine the effects of ZH on subprimal weight and yield. Carcasses were selected based on mean HCW of treatment groups for fabrication into boneless, closely trimmed, or denuded subprimals, lean, fat, and bone. Data from the 7 trials were pooled for statistical analysis. Feed...

Effects of duration of zilpaterol hydrochloride supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of grain-fed cull cows.

Several studies have shown that feeding of an energy-dense diet over short periods to cull cows could be profitable in terms of increased saleable yield and improved carcass conditions. Although the application of growth promoters, such as anabolic implants and beta agonists, in finishing of cull cows have been recorded, there is no conclusive evidence as to the timing and duration of beta agon...

Effects of feeding zilpaterol hydrochloride with and without monensin and tylosin on carcass cutability and meat palatability of beef steers.

An experiment was conducted using 200 beef carcasses to evaluate the effects of feeding zilpaterol hydrochloride with or without monensin and tylosin on carcass cutability and meat sensory variables. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with treatments arranged as a 2 (no zilpaterol vs. zilpaterol) x 2 (monensin and tylosin withdrawn vs. monensin and tylosin fed...
